This followed on from inquiries by the Social Work Services Inspectorate and the Mental Welfare Commission into the case of a 30-year-old woman, referred to as 'Miss X' for legal reasons.
The case emerged in March 2002 after Miss X was admitted to hospital suffering multiple injuries from physical and sexual abuse. Police investigation revealed she had been subject to a series of abuse and assaults over the previous weeks and possibly much longer. In August 2002 three men, including a carer, were convicted on assault charges, and were sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh to between 7 and 10 years' imprisonment.
