Social workers’ strike

Year
1979
Details

This was not a national stoppage - in total, only 15 of 143 local authorities I England went on strike - but it lasted in some areas for many months and it did, Bamford argues, have an adverse impact on public opinion of social work, and was highly divisive in the profession. One of the repercussions of the strike was the Barclay Report in 1982 into the roles and tasks of social workers.
