National Health Service Act (1946) provided free health care for all and introduced a national system of hospitals and general practitioners. National Insurance Act (1946) provided entitlement to financial provision for all of working age except married women, on the basis of contributions paid while working. This covered sickness, unemployment and old age benefits and maternity and death grants.
