In 1938 the Standing Committee of Diocesan Organising Secretaries for Moral Welfare Work in England was instrumental in the formation of a professional association to contribute to the establishment and maintenance of standards of this work, principally with unmarried mothers and those working in prostitution. In 1942, the Association became affiliated to the British Federation of Social Workers, and then to the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) in 1970..
